43: Printing Design and Publication [T - 070]
16-20 July 2001

1) How useful were the pre-course readings?

1: The pre-course readings were appropriate and were given to me in a timely way. 2: Helpful, esp. in making sure we were all on equal footing when we arrived. Was nice not to have to waste precious class time bringing class participants up to speed. 3: HIGHLY USEFUL. 4: Very. 5: Very useful and exciting to start the course from afar.

2) Were the course syllabus and other materials distributed in class useful (or will they be so in the future, after you return home)?

1: They were very useful and they will be used in the future often. 2: Will be very useful -- also helped during class because the handouts allowed us to participate more and take notes less. 3: GA's maxims, homilies and note-taking armatures were of great use. 4: Yes, in the future, very helpful. 5: Absolutely.

3) Was the intellectual level of the course content appropriate?

1: Yes! 2: Yes. 3: Absolutely. 4-5: Yes.

4) If your course had field trips, were they effective?

1: Yes! Very well spent looking at a wide variety of Web sites. 2: Yes. 3: The session spent regarding Web design with Chris Harrison was valuable. It was wise of GA to invite him, and he related many of GA's points to the Web. 4-5: Yes.

5) Did the actual course content correspond to its RBS brochure description and Expanded Course Description (ECD)? Did the course in general meet your expectations?

1: Yes! 2-5: Yes.

6) What did you like best about the course?

1: The hands-on practice of actually having a client come with a print design job for us to work on was very valuable. I would recommend this same kind of exercise be done in future classes. 2: The variety of backgrounds from which the participants came: printers, librarians, publication departments of libraries. Each participant brought a different perspective to the class. 3: GA. GA's stories. GA's manner. His style of presentation, his sense of systematic organization, his humor, his professionalism. The man knows his craft and shares his wisdom with joy. 4: The teacher was excellent. 5: The enthusiasm of the instructor, plus lots of things to look at and handle.

7) How could the course have been improved?

1: There were times when GA showed us something from a printed piece or page that I would like to have been able to copy. Access to a photocopy machine would have been useful. 2: Make it two weeks! 3: Clone GA. 4: Photocopier available. 5: I can't think of anything that might have improved this class.

8) We are always concerned about the physical well-being both of the RBS teaching collections and of materials owned by UVA Special Collections. If relevant, what suggestions do you have for the improved classroom handling of such materials used in your course this week?

1: N/A. 2: None. 3: Continue to give GA a large table. It may have been useful to have a computer with the two major design applications on them, but that would be going overboard. 5: If we could have xeroxed interesting things as they came to our attention for our reference in the future.

9) Please comment on the quality/enjoy ability of the various RBS activities in which you took part outside of class (e.g. Sunday afternoon tour, Sunday night dinner, evening lectures, Bookseller Night, Video Night, Study Night, tour of the Alderman digital/electronic centers, printing demonstrations, &c.).

1: As usual, very appropriate and enjoyable. 2: I am always impressed by the extent to which TB and his staff attend to the little details -- even down to making sure participants have evening entertainment. I appreciate having specific planned activities in the evenings so people from other classes can get together and socialize. 3: I enjoyed the opportunity to co-mingle with the visiting SHARP conference participants. Movie night didn't relate to our class. 4: There was a reception at only one of the Booksellers. 5: Lecture -- fine, pedantic. Bookseller Night -- ok. Study Night -- good, helpful. Video Night -- saw just one and had to eat.

10) Did you get your money's worth? Any final thoughts?

1: Yes! My expectations of the course were met and were exceeded. Given the length of the course I don't know how it could have been better. I highly recommend this course to anyone considering it. 2: Don't wait any longer to take this course! 3: Money's worth? Yes. Advice for others? Take this class. 4: Yes. I would advise making others aware of RBS. I wouldn't have known about this course -- or wouldn't have been told -- if the library people had wanted to attend this year. 5: Absolutely. I recommend this course highly. Excellent.
