The cover of the fourth edition of the Handbook (1940-1948) features Norman Rockwell's painting The Scouting Trail. His illustration, first used in a more elaborate form on the 1939 Boy Scout calendar (see reproduction at the back of the case), was simplified for use here. Rockwell's annual Scouting paintings were usually used in several forms.
