Rare Book School Summer 1998

Michael Twyman
No. 11: Lithography in the Age of the Hand Press
13-17 July 1998

1) How useful were the pre-course readings?

1: I found the pre-course reading (the ones I could get hold of) very helpful as orientation to basic concepts. 3: The readings were quite useful - I only read the short list because of time constraints. I would not have been lost without them, but they did help to focus me. 4: Very helpful. I only wish that I had time to read all of them.

2) Were the course syllabus and other materials distributed in class useful (or will they be so in the future, after you return home)?

1: The course syllabus and bibliography were very good. I will refer to them in the future. You could consider some visual handouts. 2: Yes. 3: Very useful for further study. 4: Excellent course syllabus which outlined in detail the path we took.

3) Was the intellectual level of the course content appropriate?

1: Very. 2: Yes. 3: Certainly to my interests! 4: Yes, and it was delightful to have MT to relate to each individual on their own level and according to their own interests.

4) If your course had field trips, were they effective?

1: Yes, it reenforced what had been presented in class. 2: Yes. 3: Absolutely! Actually seeing a stone inked and watching someone print made a great deal of difference in my understanding of the lithographic process. 4: The trip to a lithography studio was enlightening and allowed all of us to see first-hand the process of creating a print from a litho stone. The unplanned side of the trip to Bayly was an added bonus where we were able to see an exhibition of engravings, woodcuts, and lithographs.

5) Did the actual course content correspond to its RBS brochure description and Expanded Course Description (ECD)? Did the course in general meet your expectations?

1-3: Yes. 4: Perfectly.

6) What did you like best about the course?

1: MT. 2: The opportunity to examine at some leisure many examples of lithography, and to visit a working lithographer. 3: The repartee. MT is not only quite learned, but has a great sense of humor. It made the more difficult part of the course easier. 4: The opportunity to study with MT and the other students in the course. Everyone had so much knowledge that I felt like a sponge soaking it all up.

7) How could the course have been improved?

1: Only with, perhaps, the inclusion of some visual handouts. 3: A warmer room! 4: I can't think of anything.

8) Please comment on the quality/enjoyability of the various RBS activities in which you took part outside of class, eg Sunday afternoon tour, Sunday night dinner and videos, evening lectures, Bookseller Night, tour of the Alderman digital/electronic centers, &c.

1: I did enjoy the Sunday night dinner and the new videos; I attended the two lectures and Bookseller Night. 3: They provided good opportunities to schmooz and meet and talk to others - particularly new participants. 4: The RBS experience seemed to reach new heights of excellence this year.

9) Any final thoughts? Did you get your money's worth?

1: I would recommend this course highly. I did get my money's worth. 2: I feel that applicants to this course should either have taken book illustration or some other graphic course. 3: I think it would be best for participants to have handled early lithographed materials and later chromolithographers - to have a passing acquaintance with other illustration techniques, particularly engraving. Yes, I got my money's worth. 4: A wonderful opportunity to learn from the expert in the field.
