1) How useful were the pre-course readings? 1: Excellent, and very appropriate for background. 2: Very useful. 3: Helpful, but not critical. 4: I see that it would have been extremely useful if I'd done it. 5: Immensely. 6: The readings were important in enhancing the learning experience. They helped direct me in research on the subject and prepared me for our work. 7: Very useful, but class review covered the literature very well. 8: Very. 9: Excellent, except all were out of print. I, nevertheless, did obtain several - enough - of the books. 2) Were the course syllabus and other materials distributed in class useful (or will they be so in the future, after you return home)? 1: Very useful, relevant, and valuable for future study. 2: Absolutely! 3: Yes. Useful to a limited extent during the course, good for for follow-up later. 4: Yes, yes, yes. 5: Most certainly. 6: The syllabus was extensive and made it possible for me to concentrate on the lectures without taking notes, knowing that the information could be located in the syllabus. 7: Extremely detailed notes of lectures will be a reference source to return to in the future. 8: The syllabus was quite helpful and will remain a good reference in the future. 9: Useful and appropriate. 3)Was the intellectual level of the course content appropriate? 1: Absolutely - he managed to speak to everyone in an unusually varied group. 2: Yes, the pace of this course was really swift. There needed to be time to study and reflect, but that's not possible in this format. I'll just reflect over the next few weeks. 3: Yes. 4: Yes, it was terrific, especially Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 5: Yes. 6: Very much so - pleasingly challenging, while accessible. 7: Entirely - accessible, but always challenging. 8: Yes. 9: Excellent. 4)If your course had field trips, were they effective? 1: Yes. 2: N/A. 3: The prints were brought into the classroom. 6: Every day we spent time look at prints in the Bayly and this was invaluable! 7: Not applicable. 8: N/A. 9: We worked in class and were fortunate indeed to be able to use the museum's collection. 5)Did the actual course content correspond to its RBS brochure description and Expanded Course Description (ECD)? Did the course in general meet your expectations? 1-2: Yes. 3: Yes, generally. The actual content was better than the description. 4-9: Yes. 6)What did you like best about the course? 1: The instructor - his enthusiasm, warmth, and knowledge. 2: Ability to learn something about a genre of art that I have in my institution's collection. 3: Excellent blend of lecture, discussion, and practical exercises looking at and discussing prints. 4: My colleagues, our instructor, seeing actual prints, Stephen Margulies's other point of view, the variety of prints, and a portion of the theory. 5: I am always very curious about how academia talks, discusses, and analyzes art and artistic movements. 6: I was surprised and extremely pleased to hear so much of the social and political underpinnings of this art work. This enriches our understanding and makes me want to know more of the history. The course whetted my appetite for knowledge rather than leaving me sated! 7: The variety of the approaches to the course material made each day exciting and enjoyable. There were scholarly lectures, class discussions of slides as exercises in connoisseurship, and, particularly, group examinations of real (and some fake) prints from the Bayly Museum collections. A constantly challenging experience. 8: The instructor's level of knowledge and ability to teach. 9: SK - excellent, outstanding. Do it again. 7)How could the course have been improved? 1: No way that I can imagine. 2: More access to reference books. 4: More description of Japanese life and subjects, although that's my personal bias, which I had before the course. (I knew that the course was to be more about style.) 5: A hands-on element, plus a discussion of the history of its ephemera! 7: More comfortable seats; a slightly larger room. But the Bayly deserves thanks and congratulations for making its print room and collections available for this course. 8: Better classroom (mentioned above). 9: Better facilities for lectures. Lights were difficult to control. Stools were very uncomfortable. 8)We are always concerned about the physical well-being both of the BAP's teaching collections and of materials owned by UVa's Special Collections. If relevant, what suggestions do you have for the improved classroom handling of such materials used in your course this week? 2: No materials from BAP were used. 3: None. 4: Was good! 5: None. 9: Was all right, but facilities for viewing could have been better. 9)Please comment on the quality/enjoyability of the various RBS activities in which you took part outside of class, eg Sunday afternoon tour, Sunday night dinner and videos, evening lectures, Bookseller Night, tour of the Alderman digital/electronic centers, etc. 1: All excellent. 2: !!! [sic] 4: I enjoyed the lectures. I adore being in the Rotunda and have become a bookshelf designer from its inspiration. 5: Everything was dandy. 6: The Sunday night dinner and other offerings were a nice opportunity to meet others not in the class. 8: High quality - very enjoyable. Could use a bit more free time, though. 9: Enjoyed Sunday night dinner. 10)Any final thoughts? Did you get your money's worth? 1: Absolutely. This was a very dedicated, gifted teacher who gave generously of his time and knowledge to help us see better, not only Japanese prints, but any other type of artwork. One of the best courses that I have ever had. 2: !!! [sic] 3: Yes, I got my money's worth!! 4: Yes, I got my money's worth! 5: No [undecipherable ideograph]. 6: I hope a continuation or some permutation of this subject is offered in the future. 7: This is a superb course by a superb teacher. SK taught us to see Japanese prints. It was symptomatic that on the final day the class passed up its morning break in order to continue its discussion. At the end, we gave SK a standing ovation. 8: I hope that this course will be retained by RBS. If so, I would highly recommend it to others. Worth the money. 9: Enjoyed it very much. Cost is reasonable for the quality of the product. Number of respondents: 9
