The Newberry: Independent Research Libraries as Bibliographical Communities

Date: 25 July 2016
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Location: UVA Special Collections
Lecturer: Alice Schreyer - Roger and Julie Baskes Vice President for Collections and Library Services, The Newberry Library

After directing special collections at public and private academic research libraries, Alice Schreyer moved from the University of Chicago to the Newberry Library, where she is Vice President for Collections and Library Services. In this lecture she will reflect on the differences she discovered during her first year, some anticipated and others not. Among the surprises is that libraries such as the Newberry create bibliographical communities of librarians, researchers, collectors, and members of the general public. She will describe how the Newberry fosters collection-based research and learning across diverse audiences.
