This lecture is drawn from a larger project on African American literary culture at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. This is, McHenry argues, one of the most understudied, least understood moments in African American literary history. The project is organized not around prominent authors or major publications, but rather around a set of now unfamiliar and critically undervalued literary workspaces, among them anthologies and bibliographies. The lecture looks at both of these genres as portals that provide entry into the literary atmosphere of the period.
