Join Rare Book School on 17 September for special events hosted in conjunction with our Objects of Poetry exhibition, which is on view through 13 November on the second floor of UVA’s Shannon Library.

Event Program:

3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Drop-in Poetry Lounge

Tanenbaum Room, Suite 230, Shannon Library

  • Get Arts-and-Crafty. We’ll create shape poems and collages with mixed media, as well as found poetry and erasure poetry in this hands-on workshop.
  • Writer’s Eye Contest RFP (Request for Poems). Let inspiration flow! Craft a poem in response to any item (or group of items) in the show. We’ll hold a poetry reading during our Halloween closing reception on 30 October. 
  • Contribute to a magnetic poetry mosaic.

4:00 to 4:45  p.m.
Exhibition Tour

2nd Floor Gallery, Shannon Library

  • Gallery tour and Q&A with curators Barbara Heritage and Zoe Langer.

5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Mocktail Bar, Puzzles & Trivia with Prizes

Suite 230, Shannon Library

  • Mocktail bar opens at 5 p.m., with finger food and literary libations, including our own non-alcoholic “Calypso” and “Cyclops” drinks from The Odyssey.
  • Flex your poetic skills and knowledge during our trivia hour, which includes prizes for participants, and piece together our custom poetic puzzle.
  • Walk away with poetry-themed swag!

Rare Book School is located in Suite 230/231 near Saxby’s on the second floor of UVA’s Edgar Shannon Library (160 McCormick Rd.).

Parking

Information about visitor parking on Grounds can be found on the UVA Parking and Transportation website. The closest parking garage to Rare Book School is the Central Grounds Garage. Two-hour streetside parking is also available on a first-come basis on University Avenue (U.S. 250 Business Rte.) near Shannon Library.
