Famous & Forgotten Exhibition Closing Reception & Events

Join Rare Book School for Halloween-inspired activities and a closing reception hosted in conjunction with our Famous & Forgotten: The Game of Authors exhibition, on view through 12 November on the second floor of UVA’s Shannon Library.
Schedule of Closing Events
- 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.
- Film screening with popcorn and “to-treat-or-not-to-treat” candy: Hamlet (1948; 2 hour 35 minutes): directed by Laurence Olivier, and starring him, with Jean Simmons and John Laurie (Seminar Room C)
- Drop-in “Spooky Season” Show-and-Tell: Come see some of the more mysterious and spine-tingling specimens related to the show (Tanenbaum Room)
- Explore the Game of Authors or consult the “Literary Witches Oracle”: Never played the Game of Authors? Test your literary knowledge with the RBS collections. Feel inspired by Halloween? See if you can peer into the future, and try out the “Literary Witches Oracle” card set (Event Space Room)
- 4:30 to 5:00 p.m.
- Gallery tour with curators Barbara Heritage and Zoe Langer
- 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
- “Resurrection Night” Reading: Join us to recite lines from some of our exhibited “forgotten” authors, including “It was a dark and stormy night….”; OR dress up as your favorite author (preferably deceased) and recite a favorite line or two! (Event Space & Hallway)
- Mocktail Hour returns: Sample our new “Ophelia” mocktail inspired by the exhibition, as well as favorites from our September opening. Fruit, cheese, and dessert also on offer!

- Film screening, sandwiches, and popcorn: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999; 1 hour 37 minutes): an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew directed by Gil Junger and starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt; PG-13 (Seminar Room C)
- Drop-in “Color by Covers” craft workshop: Coloring images borrowed from Brontë, Dante, Dickens, and other authors featured in the show (Tanenbaum Room)

- Drop-in “Dark and Stormy Night” fiction writing contest: craft your own best-worst first line; winners will be announced and shared later this fall (Tanenbaum Room)

Rare Book School is located in Suite 230/231 near Saxby’s on the second floor of UVA’s Edgar Shannon Library (160 McCormick Rd.).
Parking
Information about visitor parking on Grounds can be found on the UVA Parking and Transportation website. The closest parking garage to Rare Book School is the Central Grounds Garage. Two-hour streetside parking is also available on a first-come basis on University Avenue near Shannon Library.
