Remembering Our Friend Richard C. Ramer

Rare Book School mourns the passing of rare book antiquarian Richard C. Ramer, who died on 31 January 2026. In addition to being a member of the Grolier Club, Mr. Ramer was also a generous supporter of Rare Book School.  

We are honored to share this remembrance of Mr. Ramer, courtesy of his family, and to celebrate his legacy:  

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend, colleague, and mentor, Richard C. Ramer (1942-2026). A rare book antiquarian based in New York with an additional office in Lisbon, Portugal, he operated his business for over 55 years. After earning his Master’s in Latin American history at Indiana University (1967), he turned his interest toward the rare book trade. His enormous knowledge of Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian rare books and books on early voyages to the New World made him a reference for colleagues and book collectors alike. Once the internet made the publication of e-catalogues easier, Richard regularly published between 20 and 40 special lists each year of old and rare books on topics as far ranging as the Dutch in Brazil, African Islands, birds, sixteenth-century books, Judaica, fencing and dueling, Goa, and Mexican imprints, among many others. These lists were always well-received and consulted as references in themselves for their attention to detail on content, extensive bibliographies, and meticulous descriptions of bindings. His catalogues and lists were valued as lasting bibliographic contributions. Over the years, Richard established close ties with curatorial and collection development staff at many of the great research libraries. He was involved in many rare book organizations including the Grolier Club, The Old Book Table, and the American Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association. 

Richard was extraordinarily supportive of young people who desired to know more about old and rare books, going out of his way to instruct students who would come to him for advice. He was also known for his deep kindness towards his long-time employees. In remembrance of Richard, the family invites donations to be made to the Rare Book School – an educational institute which Richard rigorously supported. 

Richard is survived by his wife of 43 years, Julieta Gonçalves Ramer, and his grandson, Diogo Sampaio.
