Materials that Made the Manuscript
This six-part Zoom Webinar Series is open to 10 participants
Mondays and Thursday, 2–2:50pm EST, May 18–June 4
UPDATE (5/14/20): This seminar is now full. Please consider subscribing to our newsletter for updates on similar events!
Rather than survey the manuscript book in depth, this webinar series will focus on several key areas and types of books to suggest the richness inherent in studying these materials. Participants will be provided in advance with a reading for each session (either a passage from Introduction to Manuscript Studies or an article or book chapter), and each session will begin with the presentation of images of manuscripts that will highlight or challenge the readings. Sessions will be devoted to the discussion of the materials rather than lecture; registrants should expect to participate in the conversation throughout each session. Registrants will also be participating in all six seminars.
This webinar series will run every Monday and Thursday, 2–2:50pm EST, beginning on Monday, May 18 (and breaking on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day):
- Session 1: Monday, May 18. Writing Supports: Metal
- Session 2: Thursday, May 21. Writing Supports: Wax
- Session 3: Thursday, May 28. Writing Supports: Papyrus
- Session 4: Monday, June 1. Writing Supports: Parchment
- Session 5: Thursday, June 4. Writing Supports: Wood
- Session 6: Monday, June 8. Writing Supports: Paper
Registration is open to students admitted to Raymond Clemens’ summer 2020 RBS Course, H-20 “The Book in the Manuscript Era”; remaining seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until Friday, May 15.
