Course schedule – 2022
Applications for summer 2022 courses will be accepted via our new myRBS portal, which is now open. Before heading to myRBS, please read the instructions found on the Course Application page. To be considered for the first round of admissions decisions, please submit your application(s) before 7 March.
Have a question about your application? The best way to get in touch with us is to email rbsprograms@virginia.edu or to use the request form in our new myRBS application system (rather than calling our office)! Both strategies ensure that our Programs team, which fields all course-related questions, can help you directly.
Rare Book School is offering a combination of in-person and online courses in 2022. The letter “v” in the Course ID number indicates a course that will be offered virtually. Clicking on the course title below will provide you with more information about the course length, format, cost, and content.
Summer courses will be held at the University of Virginia in the Rotunda and adjacent buildings; the Latin American Library at Tulane University; the Firestone Library at Princeton University; the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale University; the Oak Spring Garden Library; the Grolier Club; the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania; the Library Company of Philadelphia; and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
The online courses meet synchronously over five consecutive days. Participants are expected to attend all sessions of a course, either in-person or online, in order to complete the course and receive a certificate of completion. It is not possible to take two RBS courses in the same week.
Please note: RBS course dates include the Sunday preceding each five-day course. Students should make their travel plans to enable their attendance at the Sunday evening registration for in-person courses. For online courses, a virtual meet-and-greet event will be hosted on the Sunday evening before the class begins.
Scholarships, Fellowships, and Certificates of Proficiency
RBS-awarded scholarships and fellowships may be redeemed for in-person or online courses. A single scholarship or fellowship award may be redeemed for one in-person course, one 22-hour virtual course, or two 12-hour virtual courses within the same year (partial awards may not be carried over to second year). For more information, please contact rbs_scholarships@virginia.edu or your RBS-awarded scholarship or fellowship administrator directly.
The online courses also count toward RBS Certificates of Proficiency.
COVID Policy Information
Participants attending in-person RBS courses will be required to comply with the COVID-related policies at the individual host institution. Information about each location will be added to our website soon and will be kept up to date through the spring and summer. At present, masks must be worn indoors at all host institutions; in most locations, proof of vaccination must be provided (instructions relating to submitting this information will be posted as applications open); and in a few locations, unvaccinated individuals will be required to provide evidence of negative COVID test results every 48 hours. The policies are likely to change over the coming months, so please take care to ensure your compliance before traveling to attend a course.
More Information
After the 7 March first-round application deadline, applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all courses are filled, but many of the courses will fill in the first round of decisions. If you have questions about the course offerings, please email rbsprograms@virginia.edu. See the Course Application page for details of the application process. For information on this year’s tuition, as well as other related costs, please either visit the Program Costs page or click into an individual course’s description page below. For general information about RBS, consult the Frequently Asked Questions page.
A PDF version of the 2022 summer course schedule is available for download here. For course schedules from previous years, see the drop-down menu at the bottom of this page.
Decisions about transitioning in-person classes to an online format, or cancelling an in-person course for the year will be made on a case-by-case basis.
